Announcements from the Bulletin, Today, Notification-L

03/28/03, New Mulberry to be Released Monday, 3/31/03
Reminder for everyone!

The new version of Mulberry, Mulberry v3, will be released campus-wide on Monday March 31! This new version has many new features, but the big three are: 3-pane view, filters/rules, and spell-as-you-type. Early adopters of Mulberry 3 have uniformly given it positive feedback!

For Macintosh users, the new Mulberry may be downloaded and installed from here:
http://www.macalester.edu/cit/services/software/index.htm#Mulberry

For Windows users, the new Mulberry will be in the Novell Application Launcher on Monday. Just make sure to run Mulberry from the NAL window, and it will automatically get updated to version 3!

Windows XP users will need to update their Novell Client first, or the new Mulberry may not work. As previously announced, here is how to install the new Novell client for XP:

An icon (a big red "N") for the installer has been placed in your Novell Application Launcher (NAL). You must be logged into your Windows XP account with Administrator privileges for this installation to run. Double-click the icon to run it. You can find out right now if your account has Administrator status. Click Start.Control Panel.User Accounts. Does 'Computer administrator' appear under your Windows XP login name?

If yes, then run the installer! If no, you will have to login as UserAdmin, or the install will not work.

To install the new Mulberry at HOME, download it here:
http://www.macalester.edu/cit/services/software/index.htm#Mulberry

Please contact your AIA or the Help Desk, x6525, for assistance. [Notification-L]

To change the initial tab setting, click on the Customize tab and then select the User Profile link in the list of options on the left side of the page. 03/22/03, NAL Launcher Update
This message is only relevant for Windows users.

A new version of the Novell Application Launcher (NAL) has been put out on the servers. It will automatically be installed on your computer when you login to the network. The new version looks identical, but at startup you'll get a message reading, "Your NAL launcher has been updated. You need to reboot for the changes to take effect. Reboot now?" Just reboot, then you'll be done with the NAL update.

We apologize for the late notice regarding this. The update was actually inadvertently put out there, and we can't take it back. It's an important update, as it should allow us greater flexibility with the management of Windows XP computers. [Notification-L]

03/20/03, New Netware Client for PC Users
A new Novell NetWare client will be rolled out to PC users on campus beginning Monday, March 24. The client will be automatically installed on Windows 98 machines at login time, and will require the computer to be rebooted when the installation finishes. The new client for Windows XP will have to be downloaded and installed when logged on to the PC as useradmin, or installed from the Novell Application Launcher when logged on as useradmin. We highly recommend that XP users install this update, since it will make future software installations easier.

We will be staggering the update rollout by building, on the following schedule:

The Admin and Academic servers will be down the morning of Saturday, March 29, for a software upgrade, beginning at 8:00 AM. [Bulletin]

03/20/03, A Good Deal for Faculty Members
If you were planning on buying Apple Computer's iLife or Keynote presentation software for the Macintosh, now is the time. Apple has a promotion which is offering the two packages for $14.95 plus tax. This offer ends March 31st and is only available to faculty. It requires you to pay with a personal credit card, so if you buy it for work, you will need to work out reimbursement with your department. David Sisk cannot order at this price because it is sold directly to consumers. This same software will cost $130 to buy at the usual full price, which is why we are letting people who may already be interested know. For more information go to http://www.apple.com/education/hed/ilifeandkeynote/. Please note that this software is new and only works with OS X version 10.2. Computing does not have a site license for OS X 10.2, so you would need to get that as well in order to use this software. It may also be worth pointing out that Computing does not support this software. [Bulletin]

03/20/03, Upgrade Now!
Refresh your computer for spring! Visit http://www.macalester.edu/cit/services/software for lots of important software downloads. You can download Windows XP Service Pack 1 there, which will be a MUCH faster download than from off-campus, as well as Norton Antivirus for Windows and Macintosh platforms, the latest Novell clients and a ton more. All of this is at no charge to you because of your affiliation with Macalester. [Bulletin]

03/13/03, A Whole New Mulberry
The newest 3-pane version of the Mulberry e-mail client has proven very popular among beta testers. CIT is offering two sessions to demonstrate the new features. You don't need to sign up. Just show up at one of the sessions:

03/DD/03, Spring Break for Your Phone
Please change your voice mail greeting to reflect your status. It's nice to let your callers know you are not in and not to expect a quick return call. To change your greeting, access your voice mail box, then press 4 (personal options), then 3 (greetings), then 2, and follow the prompts. Your callers and our switchboard operator will be much appreciative. If you have any questions, please call Telecommunications at x.6566. [Venue]

03/13/03, Spring Break for Your E-mail
Gone for Spring Break but don't want to lose touch? There are several options available to check your e-mail or to let people know that you won't be checking it. All you need to do is point your Web browser at http://mail.macalester.edu. The Webmail option will let you log in and check your Macalester e-mail through a Web browser. We suggest that you clean up your Inbox before you leave if you plan to use this - a large number of messages can be slow to access over the Web. You can also choose the Vacation Messages/Forwarding option and either set up a vacation message to let people know that you won't be checking your e-mail, or forward all your incoming e-mail to another address that you will be checking while you're gone. When you return, you can remove the vacation message or forwarding address from the same Web page. [Bulletin]

03/13/03, LESTER Tip #13: Off Campus Access to Library Databases
LESTER is Macalester's Web portal, providing a convenient and personalized way to access a wide variety of campus and Web resources. Use your regular network/e-mail username and password to log in to LESTER at http://lester.macalester.edu.

The Library provides for off-campus access to subscription-based library databases and indexes. LESTER's "Library Indexes" and "Library-Purchased Reference Sources" channels, located on the Research tab, make it easy to access these resources from off campus. When you log in to LESTER from off campus and select a link for a library resource, you will be presented with an "Off Campus Access Login" page. Log in using your library bar code number (on the back of your Macalester ID) according to the instructions on the off-campus login page. Once you have completed this login procedure, you can access any of the library indexes and reference sources. If you have questions about off-campus access to library resources, please stop by the Library Reference Desk, call x6618, or e-mail askus@macalester.edu. [Bulletin]

03/12/03, Network Fix
In response to a critical mass of complaints about flaky behavior by applications such as Mulberry last week, CIT staff checked performance in Weyerhaeuser. They found a hardware problem at one of the switches plus a "data storm" from one computer. In other words, the problem was with networked services other than the application itself. Monitoring since then seems to indicate return to normal--for that particular issue. Please let us know at x.6525 if you see reoccurence. Thanks for your patience. [This message, a 'mini-Notification-L,' was sent to everyone in Weyerhaeuser Hall.]

The selections you make on the customize screens remain in effect until you change them. [Bulletin]
