Information Fluency Expectations for Entering Students

Technical · Productivity Tools

An entering student has familiarity with:

  • computer interface and hardware use, such as a mouse/keyboard in order to navigate the system.
  • a word processing package -- can create, save, and print (to a local printer) a document.
  • managing files -- can open, edit, read, and store files to a local drive.
  • navigating the web with a browser.
  • sending or replying to e-mails.

An entering student is able to:

  • perform a basic search in an online catalog and determine where an item is located.
  • find a book on the shelf using a classification system.
  • view a website, article, etc. with a basic awareness for their different points of view.
  • use a web search engine and maneuver through search results.
  • read and interpret a basic bibliographical citation.
  • understand the basic need to credit others when using their ideas.

An entering student is able to:

  • read a text, pulling out the main points and arguments while understanding supporting evidence.
  • outline own thoughts and turn them into an essay
