I. Ensure the provision of readily available, reliable and effective information resources in support of the educational mission of the college by

 

a. providing sufficient computers, software, library collections in all appropriate formats and multimedia facilities,

 

 

Combine Admin and Academic file/print servers into single multi-unit cluster for reliability. July 23

Purchase, receive, prepare, deliver computer equipment for new tenure-track faculty with startup funds.  Ongoing.  David, Marty, Jacob and AIAs.

 

Specify, install and implement new campus equipment database. June 16. Integrate with tracking process. August 6

Purchase or recycle, prepare, deliver computer equipment for new non-tenure-track faculty and new staff, with whatever funds (or equipment from recyclable stock) are available.  Ongoing.  David, Marty, Jacob and AIAs.

 

 

Imaging server configuration and testing. Macintosh: Adam and Jacob; PC: Adam. ASAP.

Implement scanning of residence hall computers for worms, viruses and needed patches. July 30

Reimage  labs: 302, 304, 314 Humanities, Dupre Labs, Kirk Lab and Kagin lab [imaging means placing standard software configurations on all the computers]

 

II. Ensure that major technology choices are based on carefully weighed alternatives and are consistent with MacalesterÕs information technology mission by

 

a.   adopting services based on sanctioned standards and appropriate common practices within our community

 

 

Restructure network to support reorganized printing. Begin count of print jobs in computer labs. July 30

Install new firewall. August 8

Printer name structure change.  Network staff have set the timeline, but docs must be completed first.  Prepare docs for the change..  Prepare Web page with old name, new name, model number/type.  Label printers during physical inventory.   Bonnie, Marty, Franc.  By end of August.

Update network documentation. June 18

OS X 10.x licensing.  Investigate options for licensing most recent version of OS X for all Macintoshes in selected campus labs, permitting us to build one image per lab.  David, Adam and Jacob, ASAP.

 

b.   matching information service choices to the greatest needs of the Macalester community

 

 

Plan community input and understanding of firewall policies. Fall

Plan and prepare for Fall ResNet sweeps of residence halls.  Preparations include scheduling, production of door hangars, and widespread coordination/communication with Hall Directors, parents, incoming students.  Kakki Rawson and Jesse Harman, other CIT staff as needed.  By mid-August.

 

 

User Education Committee. Finish up survey report by mid summer and continue work on the User Education Web page (ongoing). Committee members: Beth Hillemann, Ron Joslin, Jean Beccone, Patti Koehler, Pete Rogan, Jesse Harman.

 

 

Continue to gather community feedback toward evaluating our current messaging/calendaring and course management software tool deployments.  AIAs, Joel and other CIT staff.

 

 

Purchase a license for Apple Remote Desktop 2, for use in Macintosh lab management.  David, ASAP.

 

Create network protection policies to implement in the firewall in consultation with students, faculty and staff. Fall.

 

Plan campus-wide discussions of course support software with Center for Scholarship and Teaching. August 30

 

Begin identification of viable e-mail alternatives and community preferences. Fall.

 

c.   supporting positive engagement with external constituencies.

 

 

Plan meetings of the Information Services Advisory Board on Sept. 18 and Trustee Technology Committee on October 1.

 

Consult with Admissions and Advancement departments on priorities for Web programmer. August 30

 

III. Promote the use of technology to increase the efficiency and quality of the collegeÕs business, curricular and research activities by

 

a.   fostering use and understanding of appropriate information technology through training and consultative opportunities for all community members

 

 

Provide information for documentation of new file storage structure. July 30

Conduct search for temporary AIA-Humanities, currently open.  We hope to make the hire by early August so that the temp can have some time to work alongside Michael and learn the ropes.  David, Pete, Michael and faculty, by August 15.

Collaborate on writing and revising outreach letters to students, parents and faculty, as well as other explanatory communications and documentation (such as formal CIT Ôdocs,Õ Bulletin postings, Web pages, etc.).  What will people see?  How will they be affected?  Ongoing, by end of August.  David, Joel, Bonnie and other staff as needed.  Topics include:

      network registration

      server consolidation and structure

      wireless

      course folders

other visible, system-wide changes or    additions

 

 

Finish construction on Telecommunications Web page and prepare it for unveiling in new semester.  Kelly, by mid-August.

 

 

Produce and edit all material for 2004 ÔGet ConnectedÕ CD; secure permissions, send completed project to commercial firm for burning. Jacob and Bonnie, by July 16.

Move test inventory data to Insite and determine if it will work for our new equipment inventory.  Test pre-populating fields, flexibility, reporting capabilities.  Geri, Marty, Ram—n, David, Barb; ongoing

 

 

Explore the option of outsourcing support for studentsÕ personally-owned computers to a local vendor, with an eye toward relieving a major stress point on the Help Desk.  Extensive discussions, community involvement and RFPs may be needed.  Jesse, Joel, David and other Desktop Services staff as needed
