Commercial and Partisan Uses
Macalester College is a non-profit educational institution as defined by the Internal Revenue Service. As such, it is exempt from state and federal taxation and enjoys other privileges. In exchange, the College's activities and those of its students, faculty, and staff using College resources (such as the data network) cannot be allowed to compete with businesses that do not enjoy such privileges. Likewise, actions that make it appear the institution is involved in or supporting partisan political campaigns are precluded by not-for-profit status.
The College's data network, including the Web service, cannot be used to promote or sell products or services which conceivably could sustain a viable commercial market and which are not integral to the educational program. For example, the College may use its resources to sell memorabilia with a Macalester label, but not shirts, hats and scarves without such a label.
