Ownership and Responsibility
The College owns and maintains the
resources which its students, faculty and staff use to create and
record information pursuant to the educational program and administration
of the College. Thus, the College is a "carrier" of information
via electronic channels rather than a "publisher," except with regard
to official College publications subject to editorial review. The
College cannot reasonably be aware of, nor directly responsible
for, material which community members may post, send or publish
using its network and servers, including the Web.
Macalester College will respond promptly and appropriately, however,
whenever a questionable practice or product, including electronic,
created by a community member using College resources is brought
to its attention. The College recognizes its ultimate responsibility
for the appropriate use of its resources. The responsibility holds
even if the computer or server in question is personally-owned but
linked to the College voice or data network. Those with such complaints
should contact the Dean of
Students (651) 696-6220 or the
ITS Help Desk (651) 696-6525.
Contents of data and voice systems
generally are presumed to be confidential and private. In order
to ensure the systems remain viable for the whole community and
that resources are equitably shared, the College's authorized staff
must manage access to systems and files, including restricting or
blocking access when other options for resolution of conflict fail.
Data and voice systems are provided
in support of the mission of the College. Community members may
use the systems for personal purposes and entertainment when such
use does not interfere with the primary work of the College, does
not take up unreasonable system resources as interpreted by College
Information Services staff, does not lead to identifiable added
cost to the College and does not in any other way interfere with
those needing access for scholarly or administrative work.
