Excel Database
A database is a computerized record-keeping system. It is a tool for organizing, managing and retrieving information. Its overall purpose is to maintain information and to make that information available on demand. This hands-on session will show you how to set up a database and how to use the Excel data commands to manipulate the information.

Maintaining Department Web Pages with Macromedia Contribute
Macromedia Contribute makes website maintenance easy. Contribute lets you publish to websites and easily and quickly make small revisions and updates helping to keep your department web site up-to-date. This hands-on session will introduce you to the basic features of the software and how to set it up to work with your department web pages. A copy of the Contribute software will be made available to campus departments by Campus Web Services after you've completed the training.

Creating Online Tutorials with Macromedia Captivate
Macromedia Captivate (formerly RoboDemo) is award-winning software that allows users to easily create online tutorials, demonstrations or simulations. It automatically records all onscreen actions and instantly creates an interactive Flash simulation. Point and click to add text captions, narration, and e-learning interactions without any programming knowledge. This hands-on session will introduce you to this powerful software and show you how to create basic e-learning resources.

Accessing the Macalester Network with a Macintosh
For Macintosh users, accessing your files and other resources on the network is now easier than ever. In the past many Mac users avoided the Macalester network. Now with “native file access” you can easily access the various servers and their resources. Spend an hour becoming acquainted with Macalester’s network. We’ll show you how to upload and download files, locate course folders, access other servers, and how to share information.

What is Element K? Overview of this Self-Paced Online Training Tool
Element K offers online web-based training on a wide range of computer software and general computer skills topics through self-paced tutorials and instructor-facilitated online courses. It also provides access to a variety of other online training resources. Element K and its services are being made available to Macalester faculty, staff and student. This session will give you an overview of what's available and how you can sign up to get access to this training tool.

Moodle Workshop: Using the Assignments Module
The Assignments Module in Moodle allows the teacher to specify a task that requires students to prepare digital content in any format and submit it by uploading it to the server. For example, assignments to submit may include essays, images, or PowerPoint presentations. We will examine the possibilities of the Assignments modules and work with a few examples. Other topics raised by workshop participants may also be addressed. No prior Moodle experience needed.

Automatically Creating Citations and Bibliographies with RefWorks
Do you need to manage large numbers of citations with your research? Would you like to have access to and manage them with ease from any computer in the world? Using RefWorks, a resource made available by the library, you can make your life easier! In this session, we'll cover the basics of creating and managing a personal bibliographic database, importing citations from online resources and generating formatted bibliographies and papers. Even if you regularly work with EndNote, you can use RefWorks to gather citations whenever you are away from your main computer.

Building Web Pages with the Nvu Web Editor
Need to put together web pages? Nvu (pronounced N-view, for a "new view") is the campus supported web editor. Nvu makes it easy to prepare your pages by using toolbars and menus to insert the HTML code for you.

Google Unleashed!
Do you routinely use Google to search the web? Do you consider yourself a savvy Googler? Are you familiar with all of the tools that Google has available? Do you know why so many students are using Google Scholar? This session will give you an overview of the "world of Google" including Google Scholar, the Google Toolbar, Google Desktop and wide variety of other fun tools made available through Google.

OCS Web Conferencing with Windows (ends at 3:45pm)
OCS Web Conferencing is a powerful collaborative web conferencing tool that allows you to create private or public online conferences with another person or multiple people anywhere in the world; present over the web your desktop, a slideshow, or a particular application; record the entire session to a file; chat privately or publicly with other users in the conference in a chat window;and draw on an electronic whiteboard, simultaneously with other user. Anyone with an OCS account at Macalester can create a conference with any other user, anywhere in the world, at any time. Anyone outside of Macalester can join the conferences, but can't create them. This session will give you an overview of this powerful tool.

Creating Basic Web Pages with Dreamweaver MX
Dreamweaver has everything you need to develop great Web pages. This hands-on session will introduce you to the visual layout and text-editing tools available in Dreamweaver MX. We'll explore the Dreamweaver interface and learn how to create basic web pages by adding content such as text and images, create links and get an overall introduction to this powerful and intuitive Web software package.

An Introduction to ArtSTOR
ArtSTOR is a resource which includes a large library of approximately 300,000 digital images and descriptive data. This resource documents artistic traditions across many times and cultures and embraces architecture, archaeology, painting, sculpture, photography, decorative arts, and design as well as many other forms of visual culture. This session will give you a basic introduction to the ArtSTOR resource, an overview of the image collections available, an explanation of how to download and use the off-line viewing tool and will cover how faculty can use this resource with their students in the classroom.

PowerPoint Animation

Animation effects give motion to text, pictures and other content on your slides. Besides adding action, they help you guide audience focus, emphasize important points, transition between slides and maximize slide space by moving things on and off. The most common use of animation is the transitions between slides and the use of bulleted items appearing one by one. These are present animation schemes. This class will move beyond the built-in animation and focus on customizing animation. Also, PowerPoint’s photo album feature will be introduced.

Dreamweaver MX Advanced Topics: Interactivity, Style Sheets & more
In this hands-on session we'll go beyond the basics and learn how to add user interactivity and style sheets to web pages using Dreamweaver. Specific topics covered in this class include creating interactive web forms, adding navigation tools for your site, role over effects, image maps, and working with style sheets.
