Faculty Exchange Program
Macalester College-Miyagi University of Education
Faculty Exchange Program

BACKGROUND

Macalester College and Miyagi University of Education Japan, have enjoyed a long-standing relationship which has involved both faculty and student exchanges. The student exchange program began in 1973; the faculty exchange program was initiated in 1988 with the formal exchange agreement signed in 1989. The purpose of the exchange is to give faculty of each institution an opportunity to discuss research, teaching, and intercultural issues of joint concern. To date, thirty-two Macalester College faculty members have visited Miyagi University of Education through this program. Funding for the program primarily comes from a Japanese Ministry of Education grant to Miyagi University of Education. Macalester College provides additional funding as well.

The faculty exchange program is organized in the following way. Once a year - usually in September for the Miyagi University of Education faculty and in January for the Macalester faculty- a small number of professors are sent to the host country for a minimum of ten days. At least one week is spent at the host institution. During this time, the professors give a lecture or demonstration, visit classes or other places relevant to their research or teaching interests, and undertake local cultural excursions. Past participants have used additional free time to visit other places in the host country, either as cultural observers or to fulfill other academic goals. For January 2002, Macalester will select up to three faculty to participate in the exchange.

PROGRAM ORGANIZATION

Schedule

Macalester faculty participants are required to spend one full work week at Miyagi University of Education (as a group) and an additional three days in Japan. For the January 2002 program, it is expected that Macalester faculty will need to arrive in Sendai on Monday, January 14 and depart from Sendai on Saturday, January 19. During the independent time, Macalester faculty are expected to make their own travel and living arrangements as they see fit.

Cost

Macalester College will provide funding toward a round-trip air ticket between Minneapolis/St. Paul and Tokyo (advance purchase, economy class) and a two-week JapanRail pass (a maximum amount for these two items is currently set at US$2,000). Miyagi University of Education will give each Macalester participant a grant (in cash upon arrival in Japan) intended to cover room, board and incidental costs for the stay in Sendai and an additional three days in Japan. In the past, some Macalester faculty have found that their grant exceeded the actual cost while others found it necessary to supplement this with their own funds. All personal expenses are the responsibility of the individual participant.

Participant Obligations

Macalester College faculty spend at least ten days in Japan, including one week at Miyagi University of Education and are asked to prepare one or two lectures (in advance consultation with Miyagi University of Education) for presentation during their time in Sendai. A written summary of the lecture will be published by Miyagi University of Education in a compilation prepared for Japan's Ministry of Education. Upon return from Japan, faculty are required to write a short report summarizing their activities and evaluating the program. Faculty should also be prepared to take copies of research or teaching materials to be given to Miyagi University of Education colleagues.
