Faculty Development International Seminar

Macalester's Faculty Development International Seminars, held every other year, engage 10 to 15 Macalester faculty and staff in a three-week intensive learning and independent study program overseas.

Our 8th Seminar, to be implemented in May/June 2010 in The Hague and Amsterdam, will engage participants in the concept and practice of "Global Citizenship"with special focus on questions of human rights and urban life.

The overall theme of Macalester's 7th Faculty Development International Seminar (FDIS) in 2008 was "The Israeli-Palestinian Impasse." This seminar included special guest speakers and commissioned authors Juan Cole, Salim Tamari and William Quandt at Macalester in April and May; a series of pre-departure meetings of the Macalester participants; and a full schedule of overseas seminar sessions from May 25 - June 14, 2008 in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

These seminars are designed and coordinated by Michael Monahan, Director of the International Center and Ahmed Samatar, Dean of the Institute for Global Citizenship.

A full description of all seminars are available from the International Center. The commissioned papers and faculty essays from each seminar appear in the Macalester International, available from the Institute for Global Citizenship.

Previous Faculty Development International Seminars include:
