MACALESTER RECOMMENDED PROGRAMS FOR STUDY ABROAD

Macalester's comprehensive list of recommended study abroad options currently numbers about 65 overseas and 10 domestic recommendations. The list is reviewed and updated annually; all programs are selected for fit with the Macalester curriculum and the Study Abroad Mission Statement, as well as excellence in the standards of good practice for off-campus study.

  • Recommended Programs by Major

The Evaluation Criteria for the selection of Recommended Programs:

  1. Prospects for enduring high-quality teaching and an academic environment conducive to study abroad learning in an intellectually challenging atmosphere with other well-qualified and highly motivated students.
  2. Academic courses that draw on the strengths and distinctive resources of the host instiution and/or local environment.
  3. Tightness of fit and complementarity between learning abroad and learning on-campus in the major.
  4. Opportunities for high-quality language instruction (in non-Anglophone countries).
  5. Evidence of consistently good education experiences by Macalester students and/or recommendations by other high-quality internationalist liberal arts colleges.
  6. Prospects for Macalester influence in helping improve the intellectual, cross-cultural, and foreign language components of the program for our purposes (e.g. through representation on boards, program reviews, faculty exchanges, consortia assesments).
  7. Evidence of program professionalism and responsibility with regard to study safety.
  8. Level of student access to and involvement in cross-cultural opportunities to help extend students' international and intercultural perspectives.
  9. Significant opportunities for students of the liberal arts to develop and apply specific knowledge and skills in another cultural context.
  10. An on-site program staff available and competent to assist international students.
  11. Reasonable cost for education gained.
