Integrate (don't ignore) your study away experience

What you can do:

  • Did you improve your foreign language capabilities? Don't lose it! Participate in a language table, visit the language houses, and maintain your proficiency by seeking out native speakers
  • Class discussion - share your experience/gained perspective/knowledge with classmates in a proper setting. Did you have a wonderful internship or independent study project? Share it by giving a short presentation to your classmates.
  • Thinking about an Honors Project? Talk to your professors about doing an Honors Project based on your independent study or internship you did abroad - this is the perfect opportunity to delve deeper into a subject you found interesting and inspiring.
  • Don't forget to correspond with friends and family from your host country. Stay in touch and stay abreast of current events in your host country- become the resident expert.
  • Work-study and volunteer opportunities at the Int'l Center (IC)
    • First-year int'l student mentor
    • Study away peer advisor
    • Study away returnee student mentor
    • Assist with pre-departure orientation for future study away participants
  • Submit original writing you did while abroad to Mac Weekly, your home paper, to Transitions Abroad (www.transitionsabroad.com), a great publication on alternative work, study and travel overseas (copies in the IC library), or to Abroad View (www.abroadviewmagazine.com).
  • Submit original photos to the Study Away Photo Contest. Look in Today for upcoming deadlines.
  • Career Paths and Internships. See your experience as a 'resume builder' and note the skills you learned abroad, such as:
    • Language proficiency and critical thinking
    • Multicultural/cross-cultural experiences
    • Adaptability and flexibility
  • Community Service Office (x6040)

    • International Speakers Program (contact CSO)
    • International Kids' Fest (Contact Maction x6440)
