Faculty > Dr. Jessica Ka Yee Chan
Jessica Ka Yee Chan's research and teaching contest the fine line that is often drawn between aesthetics and politics. She is currently working on a manuscript that tackles the problematics of “propaganda” and “pleasure” in films produced the “Seventeen Years” (1949-1966) in communist China. Chan has a particular interest in the work of translation as an intervention in the writing of film history and the canonization of film theory. At Macalester, she teaches “Cinema and Translation.”
Chan’s “Translating ‘Montage’: The Discreet Attractions of Soviet Montage for Chinese Revolutionary Cinema” is forthcoming in the Journal of Chinese Cinemas. She has published English translations of Chinese critical writings on opera films in the Opera Quarterly.
