Hubert H. Humphrey Visiting Chair
in International Studies

for one-semester position beginning
September 2010 or January 2011

The International Studies Department at Macalester College seeks to hire a distinguished scholar, writer, artist, or professional, in any discipline or field, broadly engaged in issues of a global or international nature, to hold the Hubert H. Humphrey visiting professorship. The appointment will be for either the fall or spring semester of 2010-2011. The salary for this position will be highly competitive. Compensation will also include, at the chair-holder’s option, occupancy of a comfortable home near campus and use of a college office for the entire academic year, thus making it an attractive retreat or base of operations.

The International Studies Department at Macalester is the oldest (since 1949), broadest, and deepest such unit at any U.S. liberal-arts college. Our faculty is interdisciplinary and covers a broad range of humanities and social sciences. Our students hail from and travel to all continents and have interests including but not limited to development studies, human rights, the environment, global media, cultural flows, and the many arts. Thus we are less concerned with the specific field or profession of chair candidates than we are with the richness and breadth of their intellectual and creative commitments.

We ask candidates, at the initial phase of application, to send us a detailed cover letter and a CV. The cover letter should describe the candidate’s past and present transnational experiences, and sketch out two or more courses (or a range of subjects) the candidate would be pleased to teach. The teaching load for this position is two courses in one semester, or, at the chair-holder’s option, one course each semester for the full year. The students will be talented undergraduates who may be introductory or advanced.

Please send your cover letter and CV to:
