The Somali Catastrophe: Reflections on a Recent Journey to Mogadishu
Somalia has now a reputation of being among the world's most wretched countries and its capital as the most dangerous city. Yet, the dominant explanations continue to at once recycle versions of "tribalism" as the causal factor and practitioners proffer remedies that reinforce the very sources of the condition. This lecture will: (a) give a glimpse of what has become of Mogadishu after a recent visit, and (b) offer an alternative perspective as well as policy recommendations.

"They go to die" - a documentary film-in-progress by Jonathan Smith
A powerful film about the human rights abuses, unethical hiring/firing practices, and social stigma surrounding TB and HIV/AIDS among workers in the mines in South Africa.
Jonathan has not yet completed the film and is seeking input from audiences so that he can shape the final documentary. He will show the film in segments, to allow for the audience discussion between clips.

The S.E. Onukogu Foundation is a non-profit organization established to provide self empowerement to people in need. Their principal aim is to provide people in rural Nigeria with access to free medical care and basic skills training through a comprehensive approach to poverty. Their mission can be broadly divided into the following categories: 1) Medical, 2) Literacy and, 3) Skills Training.
