Jenna Rice is a visiting lecturer in International Studies for Fall 2011. She is a Ph.D. candidate at Stanford University in the Department of Anthropology, where she is the OTL Stanford Graduate Fellow. Her dissertation examines the ways in which Syrians’ sensibilities toward giving and philanthropy, beneficence, and society are changing in the context of the country’s recent liberalization. Other research interests include Islamic economies, “Ard al-Qitat” (“The Land of Cats”) and the history of awqaf (endowments); Middle Eastern foodways, nature and the environment, and literature.
