Services We Provide
The folks in our office are here for one primary reason: to do
whatever we can to help students think about, seek, arrange, and
experience wonderful internships that expand horizons and enhance
educations! We are a resource not only to students, but to community
organizations who wish to work with students, and to faculty who
believe structured real world experiences complement a quality liberal
arts education. The Internship Program works to create partnerships
of students, faculty, and community organizations that facilitate
experiential learning.
Students
Internship consultations. We are happy to meet with students
who are considering an internship. We can help you examine your
interests, areas of study, and current skills to help determine
what kind of internship experience is right for you. We have all
the information about how to make an academic internship work for
you, including the registration process, scheduling options, working
it into your major, etc.
Internship search guidance. We will help you brainstorm
possible options to get you started, and then instruct you on how
to use all the resources available to find the best internships.
Cover letter and resume development. You will need a resume
when you begin interviewing for an internship, and we will help
you create and refine a good one!
Interview preparation. Getting an internship position
usually hinges upon being able to communicate in person who you
are and what you can do. We can help you prepare for this sometimes
tricky and intimidating process.
Registering the internship for credit. We will help you
do everything you need to do to register the internship for academic
credit, from assisting you in the development of a Learning Contract
with your faculty sponsor and site to completing the paperwork for
the Registrar.
General support. Our office is a primary source of support
for making your internship a success. We are here to answer questions,
respond to problems that arise, and support you in your learning
and growth. Each term, we will arrange to visit 20-25 of you in
your internship sites to see what you are doing and offer the support
of the school.
Coordinating evaluation of your internship. Our office
will facilitate the completion and distribution of evaluation forms
necessary for your faculty sponsor to assess and grade your internship.
Community Partners
The Internship Program will help you develop, post, and promote
your internship opportunities as appropriate. We are here to try
and connect the best Macalester intern candidates with your organization,
and to facilitate a positive working relationship with the intern
throughout the course of the internship. See the Employers section
for more detail.
Faculty
We understand that taking on the role of being a Faculty Sponsor
for an intern is a real commitment and an additional pressure on
your time and energy. Our office strives to take on as much responsibility
as we can for the administration and oversight of the intern’s
actual off-campus experience, allowing you to focus primarily on
the academic component of the intern’s work.
The Internship Director is available to consult on the development
of a specific internship and learning contract, focused management
of individual intern situations, and the development of potential
internship opportunities for future students. He is also usually
available for lunch.
