Liberal Arts Career Network (LACN) Quick Guide

The new online searchable internship database for Macalester College is the Liberal Arts Career Network (LACN), a consortium of 28 top liberal arts colleges (primarily situated on the east coast). All of these schools pool their internship postings, making it a sizable resource for students seeking a borad range of opportunities all around the country. In addition to being a great seachable database, this new system has a "Job Agent" feature that will email you when new opportunities arrive that fit criteria you have set up in your profile.

GETTING THERE AND GETTING IN
• Go to www.macalester.edu/internship and click on the link for LACN

• Use your email address as "username", and then the password emailed to you in early March (this number was automatically generated by LACN).

• If you have forgotten your password or do not have it, simply click on "forgot password" and LACN will send it to you.

• Once you are in LACN, you will be asked to create a profile at which point you can change your password.

SEARCHING FOR AN INTERNSHIP
• On the main page, when you want to search for an internship, click on the "Job Postings" button on the left. The drop down menu will include Internship options for you.

• In a search, you will create a list of positions of interest based on criteria you set. When you are finished looking at a specific internship description, do not use the Back Button at the top of the page to return to your list. This will take you back to the "New Search" page. Instead, select "Back to Search Results" in the "ACTIONS" box on the right to return to your list of internships.

SEARCHING TIPS
• Less is more – one keyword and a state are usually best. The keyword search titles, job functions, and text of the internship description.

• Search all available opportunities, not just from your career center

• Very few organizations do anything with online applications or interview dates. Do not try to apply for any jobs or internships through Grand Avenues.
