How Macalester Chose Google Apps for Education
The process of evaluating and choosing a new e-mail tool for Macalester College began in January 2007. A workgroup
composed of faculty and staff from across the College performed an in-depth study of Macalester's needs and
how the top tools met these needs. The analysis included multiple opportunities for community feedback and involvement,
including surveys, focus groups and volunteer testers who tried out four different packages. The workgroup
presented its findings to the Senior Staff of the College in February 2008, including a recommendation to adopt
Google Apps for Education. You may download the full text of the workgroup's final report, in PDF format.
Have Other Schools Picked Google Apps?
Macalester College is known for leadership in many areas, but for mission-critical IT endeavors, we're more conservative. We would
not be moving to Google Apps unless we were satisfied that the company and its products had proven themselves at other top-notch colleges
and universities. Many institutions have already switched to Google Apps, and some of their reasons for doing so are similar to our
own situation. These case studies and presentations provide meaningful comparisons.
