Web Browsers

Web browsers are used to read web pages on the Internet. Firefox and Internet Explorer for Windows are supported browsers at Macalester.

Recommended Browsers

Macalester ITS recommends that students, staff and faculty generally use Firefox 2 or 3 as their day-to-day web browser. We recommend this browser for a variety of reasons. However, it is important to realize that no one browser works on every web site and you may need to use a different browser occasionally.

1600grand

Case in point, 1600grand is one such web site. While our limited testing seems to indicate that Firefox 3 works reasonably well in 1600grand, the use of Firefox 3 is not currently supported by the manufacturer, Sungard. That means that if you encounter a problem in 1600grand while using Firefox 3 we won't be able to get any help fixing it. Obviously this severely limits our ability to troubleshoot and fix such issues. For this reason we recommend that when you are accessing 1600grand you should use IE 6 or IE 7 if you use a PC, and Firefox 2 or Safari 2 if you use a Mac. These browsers are supported by Sungard and they will provide assistance to us in troubleshooting and repairing issues.

Firefox

Firefox is a product of the Mozilla foundation and is the successor to the well-known 'Mozilla' browser. It features improved security, tabbed windows, live RSS bookmarks, a pop-up blocker and many other features. It runs on all major computer platforms. ITS recommends you use Firefox as your primary Web browser.

Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer is Microsoft's web browser. We recommend that all users upgrade from IE 6 to IE 7 for security reasons. IE 7 features improved security, tabbed windows, live RSS bookmarks, a pop-up blocker and many other features. IE is only available for Windows.
