Computer Energy Use
Energy Equivalents
- You will always use less energy by putting your computer to sleep or shutting it down. It does NOT hurt your computer to turn it on or off multiple times per day.

Paper Use at Macalester
About 15,000 sheets of paper are printed each day at Macalester.
During Wasteless Wednesday on February 25, 2009, reams of paper were displayed that show the amount of paper printed each day on campus.

This totals to about 105,000 sheets per week, and 3,150,000 sheets per year, costing about $26,000 each year to provide students with printed copies of articles, assignments and more.
The amount of paper printed per year would stand 1,050 feet high if it was stacked up, which is the height of 10 Macalester wind turbines on top of each other!
This is an average of 1,700 sheets, or 3.5 reams, per student per year.
In the Humanities Resource Center, an average of 930 pages are printed per day, which is 6,500 sheets per week!
In the library, an average of 5,383 pages are printed per day, which is 37,700 sheets per week!
This is what a typical week of Macalester printing in the library looks like.
