Current Sustainable Practices at ITS

Purchasing

  • ITS purchases all Energy Star compliant hardware for maximum energy efficiency.
    • "Office Equipment that has earned the Energy Star helps save energy through special energy-efficient designs, which allow them to use less energy to perform regular tasks, and automatically enter a low-power mode when not in use. Most office equipment is left on for 24 hours a day, making energy-efficient design and power management features important for saving energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming. In addition to reducing power use for the products themselves, Energy Star qualified office products feature energy-efficient designs for accessories. So, products sold with an external power adapter, cordless handset, or digital front-end, must have accessories which meet the Energy Star specifications for External Power Supplies (EPS), Telephony, or Computers. These requirements ensure that the Energy is represented only on the market's most energy-efficient products."
    • For more information on Energy Star click here.
  • ITS purchases products from vendors that promote sustainability, like Dell and Apple.
    • Dell is committed to creating efficient and energy saving products. They provide free pick up for every product and have free recycling and community re-use programs. Dell is a partner of Energy Star and is a certified producer of RoHS (Reduction of Hazardous Substances) compliant products. Also, they have created a chemical management process aimed at eliminating all chemicals harmful to human health or the environment, including BFRs, or Brominated Flame Retardants, and PVC plastics, or polyvinylchloride.
    • For more information on Dell's sustainable practices, click here.
    • Apple is also a member and co-founder of Energy Star, and is committed to reducing energy use through creating efficient power supplies, computers, and programs. Apple has also made improvements in CPU power management through a migration to LCD (liquid crystal display) technology, enabled a power savings of 92% in sleep-mode and a 73% decrease in off-mode power consumption between the first-generation iMac and the current iMac.
    • For more information on Apple's sustainable practices, click here.
  • ITS purchases Aspen30 paper which is made from 30% recycled paper.
    • One ream of Aspen30 paper saves 3.66 KWhs of energy, 1.6 pounds of greenhouse gases, and 6.4 gallons of waste water.

Electronics Donations and Recycling

  • ITS has donated reusable electronics to over 30 organizations and schools.
    • All computers donated are at least four years old and have a clean operating system installed
    • As of September 2008, ITS has donated about 150 computers
    • The most recent donation was 60 computers given to a local charity, PCs for People
    • Any electronics that are not reusable are recycled responsibly
    • Packaging from electronics is reused and recycled
    • For a list of organizations and schools that received donations click here.

Server Virtualization

  • ITS uses server virtualization to minimize the number of physical computers in the operating center. This reduces energy use, saves money, and reduces the overall heat build up.

Print Release Stations

  • ITS has installed print release stations in the Library and the Humanities Resource Center to reduce paper waste by eliminating accidental printing.
