Special Opportunities > Goals of Study Abroad ListThe overall goals of creating an approval list of study abroad programs: 1. To improve the quality of study abroad programs in support of the LAS major. 2. To significantly decrease the number of Macalester-approved programs for the major in an effort to improve quality, to enhance integration with the Macalester curriculum, and to build stronger inter-institutional relations while still maintaining a reasonable level of curricular, pedagogical and geographical diversity. The goal of academic quality is the most critical, but the two goals are linked, for high-quality study abroad advising, curricular integration, and collaborative program-building are not really feasible if students participate in so many programs that Macalester faculty and staff cannot know them intimately and assess them adequately.
