These
programs have been chosen on the basis of the general criteria and to
provide geographical, thematic and pedagogical diversity. This is
not a comprehensive list of all programs approved for the major, but
rather those in which students have experiened the most success.

Beyond
the 7 programs outlined here, Macalester LAS students also have accessed selected additional programs in the
region, either because these are organized by approved study abroad
sponsors that offer programs in multiple sites (ACM, BUTLER, CIEE, IES,
LEXIA, MSID and SIT) or because they appear on the approval list
of other Macalester academic departments. We will also recommend
programs in Cuba if/when the academic license issues are resolved and
when study abroad programs can return to the island with official and
legal status. PROGRAMS
ACM Tropical Studies in Costa Rica
"Tropical Field Research is a spring semester program for advanced
independent work in the natural and social sciences and the humanities.
Students design and conduct research projects under the supervision of
prominent researchers and scholars who assist in all aspects of the
research process, from proposal writing to field work to final writing
and presentation. Over the past 36 years, many program participants
have gone on to professional careers related to their research
experience in Costa Rica."--Paul Dosh 2009 CIEE Programs in Brazil As
of Spring Semester 2009 Brazil was the most popular study abroad
destination in Latin America. At both of these locations students
have expressed extreme satisfaction. HECUA Program in Ecuador
"Participating in a Latin American internship will impact your life by
strengthening your insight to human rights and social justice issues.
Internship sites include organizations working on health, youth
development, gender, human rights, environment and other issues." "HECUA-Ecuador
is one of the two most successful abroad programs for Macalester
students studying in Latin America. Located in Quito and directed
by the much-admired Professor Martha Moscoso, Macalester students
generally rave about this program. This program requires a lot of
independence and autonomy on the part of participants, who make a major
time commitment to interning with a community organization. One
of the best two or three programs in Latin American."--Paul Dosh, 2009 SIT Programs in Bolivia, Nicaragua and Peru Boliva "Based
on the experiences of over a dozen Macalester participants in recent
years, SIT-Bolivia is clearly one of the best, if not the best,
all-around abroad program for Mac students studying in Latin
America. Longtime program director Ismael Saavedra is an
impressive individual, administrator, and teacher, and is much beloved
by program participants. The program forces an intense learning
community among participants and the group travels extensively
throughout Bolivia while still spending ample time in Cochabamba, where
students stay with host families. The crack-of-dawn Tai Chi sessions in
Ismael's personal Chinese donjon-style house are not to be
missed. An intense program, an intense country; Macalester
student are always glad they chose this program." —Paul Dosh, 2009 Nicaragua "SIT-Nicaragua
has recently climbed into the select ranks of Latin America programs
with virtually no detractors among Macalester alumni of the
program. It offers the standard excellent approach to study
abroad that distinguishes most SIT programs. I knew fewer details
about this program, but Nicaragua is a fantastic site for study abroad
and based on student reviews I strongly recommend this program."--Paul
Dosh, 2009 Peru SIT-Peru
is too new a program to say much about it, but given that it's an SIT
program in Latin America I would bet on it quickly becoming a favorite
of Macalester students. Stay tuned. —Paul Dosh, 2009
