SPEAK!
A Series of Conscious Conversations

The mission of SPEAK! is to engage the Macalester community in a series of intimate, on-going conversations with dynamic, influential speakers reflecting on currently relevant transnational issues. SPEAK! is designed to be a student-friendly space that allows audience members to participate, engage, and access knowledge. What makes SPEAK! a different type of lecture series is that guests will speak with students rather than to students.

"Performance as Justice"

Tuesday, October 12, 2010

John B. Davis Lecture Hall

Campus Center

Incorporating a blend of spoken word performance art with concepts of social and political transformation, this intensive workshop will explore ways to create performances that make the personal political. The goal is to deeply explore our individual and group oppressions, desires, and thirst for liberation, then forge that into art that challenges, provokes and awakens. Come prepared to work, to think, to engage.

A performer, author, and musician, solidad decosta is an uppity Portugese woman who isn't afraid to claim her Black Latina maternal ancestry. Equal parts street journalist, storyteller, and crone-ta-be with Leo moon credentials, solidad's work encompasses the why and where of life outside boxes in a label obsessed world, and the what, when, who, and how of everything else.
