Lealtad-Suzuki Center Signature Programs
The Lealtad-Suzuki Center,
part of the Department of Multicultural Life, offers numerous programs and
services for the Macalester

Student Collective Gathering
·
Allies Project – Participation in the
Allies Project gives faculty, staff, and students the opportunity to demonstrate
their commitment to creating a safe environment and community for all
people regardless of sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, national origin,
gender, religion, age, or ability. Allies of the Allies Project provide
support and resources to individuals and/or groups who are exploring their
own feelings and/or struggling with issues related to their multiple
identities. Click

Pluralism
and Unity Program – Engages a diverse group of first-year students in
dialogues about race and class issues and incorporates field trips into the
Twin Cities
communities in order to advance their understanding of their multiple
identities and their
ability to affect positive change in an increasingly diverse world.

Soup
and Substance Lunch Series – A monthly lunch series program that brings
students, staff, and faculty together around food and
conversation. An array of soups from across the world is provided,
and participants engage in dialogues that center around topics related to
various cultural heritage months.
·
SPEAK Series – “Students
Participating, Engaging, and Accessing Knowledge,” the SPEAK! Series
engages the Macalester community in a series of intimate conversations with
dynamic and influential speakers on important transnational issues. What makes SPEAK! a different type of lecture series
is that the speakers talk with
rather than just to students.

Student
Collectives –
Asian Women of the Diaspora, Black Women of the Diaspora, Men of Color,
Mixed People, Queers of Color, Transgender/Gender Queer, White Identity,
and Women of Color Collectives provide students with the opportunity to
talk together about identity and diversity issues both within their
specific collectives and in inter-group dialogues. Each collective
group is facilitated by trained faculty, staff, and students. The collectives are organized around
racial identity groups as an entry point to look at all of our multiple
identities as sometimes dominant and sometimes subordinate when we look at
power and privilege in today’s global society.

Tapas Series - A monthly series of programs aimed at highlighting
diversity and multiculturalism within the Macalester community. Each
Tapas program focuses on a different cultural aesthetic, ideal, or custom
of a particular community.

Xpressions – An opportunity for
Macalester students to express themselves and showcase their artistic
talents. Through teaching and
performing, Xpressions aims to provide participants with greater
appreciation and knowledge of different art forms, including spoken word,
poetry, music, painting, drawing, sculpture, theater, dance, film,
photography, research, and design.

Personal Consultation – Students, staff, and faculty are encouraged
to schedule personal consultations with the Director of the Lealtad-Suzuki Center for any questions or concerns
they may have pertaining to multicultural issues, programming, etc.

Special Programs Fund – The Center has a limited amount of funds
available to assist student organizations and campus department in
co-sponsoring events. To apply for these funds, please complete the Special
Programs Fund Application. Completed forms should be returned to
the Lealtad-Suzuki
Center in Kagin
Commons.

Lealtad-Suzuki Center Awards – These awards, presented at the
Department Multicultural Life's “Harambee!” celebration, honor
students who, throughout their work on campus both in and out of the
classroom, embody the mission of the Department of Multicultural Life and
the legacies of the Lealtad-Suzuki Center’s namesakes and Mac alums,
Catharine Lealtad and Esther Suzuki. In addition, the winners of the Lealtad-Suzuki Center have demonstrated their
academic excellence at Macalester by maintaining a cumulative grade point
average of 3.0 or above.
