Karla Benson Rutten, Director of the Lealtad-Suzuki
Center
Hello! As Director of the Lealtad-Suzuki
Center , I am the initial contact point for students, faculty,
staff, alumni, and community members seeking assistance or raising concerns
regarding multicultural issues. I act as the training and development
coordinator around skills related to cross-cultural communication, group
work, and recognition of difference; coordinate with various offices and
departments to assist in the management and promotion of multicultural
programming and services; and design and develop new multicultural
programming for the Macalester campus community. I also
coordinate the Pluralism and Unity Program for first-year students.
As a member of the Department of Multicultural Life staff, I develop
and maintain communication about the Lealtad-Suzuki
Center and the Department of
Multicultural Life, including our web pages and publications.
I graduated from Iowa State University
with a bachelor's degree in psychology and completed a master's degree in
higher education at the University of Maryland-College Park. I worked
at Georgetown
University
in Washington,
DC, for
two years as an Area Coordinator, and prior to coming to Macalester in the
fall of 2002, I worked at Bowling
Green State University in Bowling Green,
Ohio, as the Assistant Director of
Residence Life for Educational Initiatives. I have been working in
higher education for nine years.

Hello!
I am the Department Coordinator for the Department of Multicultural
Life at Macalester
College.
My role is to provide administrative assistance to the Dean of
Multicultural Life and the Director of the Lealtad-Suzuki
Center.
I am responsible for providing information about department and Center
programs, coordinating the logistics and operation of special events,
developing and maintaining databases, assisting in the supervision and
training of student employees and the up-keep of the department’s
organization. I am also in charge of the follow-up and tracking of the
departmental budget.
I am originally from Morocco,
North Africa, where I grew up and lived before meeting moving to Minnesota
in 2001 with my significant other. I hold an Associate degree in
International Trade from the Morrocan branch of
the London
International House College, and an Applied Management degree from
the Morrocan branch of the Fondation
des Hautes Etudes Economiques
et Sociales de Bruxelles.
Prior to coming to Minnesota,
I worked as the Administrative Manager for an International Danish
laboratory in Morocco.

The role of the Cultural House and Community Outreach
Coordinator for the Lealtad-Suzuki Center assists
in developing and maintaining new and continuing programming for the
Cultural House, supervises the Cultural House student staff, manages
logistical aspects of the space, assists in developing Lealtad-Suzuki
Center and Department of Multicultural Life events, and coordinates efforts
to involve the greater community into the work of the Department of
Multicultural Life.
