The Lealtad-Suzuki Center Staff

Karla Benson Rutten, Director of the Lealtad-Suzuki Center

Karla Benson Rutten picHello!  As Director of the Lealtad-Suzuki Center , I am the initial contact point for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members seeking assistance or raising concerns regarding multicultural issues.  I act as the training and development coordinator around skills related to cross-cultural communication, group work, and recognition of difference; coordinate with various offices and departments to assist in the management and promotion of multicultural programming and services; and design and develop new multicultural programming for the Macalester campus community.   I also coordinate the Pluralism and Unity Program for first-year students.  As a member of the Department of Multicultural Life staff, I develop and maintain communication about the Lealtad-Suzuki Center and the Department of Multicultural Life, including our web pages and publications.

I graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelor's degree in psychology and completed a master's degree in higher education at the University of Maryland-College Park.  I worked at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, for two years as an Area Coordinator, and prior to coming to Macalester in the fall of 2002, I worked at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio, as the Assistant Director of Residence Life for Educational Initiatives.  I have been working in higher education for nine years.
