Mock Trial & Debate
Macalester?s pre-law students find the college?s forensics program, among the finest in the country, a good way to hone their debate skills. Each year about 40 students compete in traditional debate, parliamentary debate and mock trial tournaments around the country.
In 2005, two Macalester teams competed at the American Mock Trial Association's national championship tournament. The field was the result of a winnowing process that reduced some 500 intercollegiate mock trial teams to a group of 64 select teams. While the Macalester contingent fell a couple of wins short of their goal of placing in the top ten, two Macalester students captured individual honors. Both Laura Bower '06 and Daniel Burgess '05 were named All-Americans by the mock trial association. Among the 100-plus students competing for these awards, Bower finished in a two-way tie for first and Burgess tied for third. |
