Technological Change and Intellectual Property
A Symposium for
Faculty, Students, and Staff
April 5, 2002
New technologies and digitization of existing scholarship provide easy access to an overwhelming amount of information -- as well as misinformation. Fulltext databases, new scholarly publishing initiatives, digital transformations of collections combine with questionable Web content available on the Internet to challenge colleges and universities. In this new environment, how and what are we teaching students in order for them to navigate, interpret and synthesize this rapidly-expanding universe of available information? How do they learn to recognize and document authorized sources? Since the digital environment greatly expands the potential for misuse of information, we must ask
what does it mean to be 'responsible' and 'ethical' users of information?
how do we teach respect for others' intellectual labor?
We hope to explore
these and related questions during our symposium.
Academic Integrity: Technological change and intellectual property is a symposium to be held at Macalester College, Friday, April 5, jointly sponsored by Carleton, Macalester, and St. Olaf colleges. The symposium will explore
- the impact of technology on scholarly research
- changes in scholarly publishing
- the role of information literacy
- copyright and plagiarism issues
- opportunities for collaboration in teaching ethical use of information resources
The objective of this symposium is to start dialogues on all campuses among all members of the college community: computing and information technology staff, faculty, librarians, students, and any and all academic staff members with an interest in intellectual property.
