Who can use the library lab?
While the library lab is open to the public, the primary
purpose of the lab is to meet the general computing needs of
current Macalester College faculty, staff and students. Other
users may be asked to surrender resources or to leave the lab
if their use interferes with this purpose. Academic pursuits
take precedence over other lab uses! Any user abusing equipment/facilities
or disrupting the work of others will be subject to regular
College discipline procedures. Users are responsible for any
damage to equipment that they cause.

Is there a charge for or
limits placed on printing?
Current Macalester students, faculty and staff are not charged
for printing in the library lab. Other users, such as alumni
or people from the community, may be charged for excessive printing
(5 cents per page) or may be asked to limit their printing.
All users are strongly encouraged to print only ONE copy of
documents and to use the photocopiers in the library to make
additional copies. The library lab reserves the right to place
further limits to printing for library lab users as appropriate.

Downloading software or changing
computer configurations
Users are not allowed to change the configuration of any lab
computer - that includes moving folders, saving permanent files,
disconnecting any cables/cords from lab computers, removing
or downloading software, or changing system setup in any way.
Software has been installed on each lab machine to discourage
such changes. Lab users who wish to suggest modifications to
the configuration of the computers or suggest additional software
to be loaded should do so using the suggestions/comment
form, or by speaking with a lab consultant.

Use of imaging annex/web development
studio computers
Imaging Annex/web development studio computers are designed
to offer special services for Academic projects related to graphic
and web design. These facilities and their specialized equipment
and software should be primarily used for web development projects,
scanning, page layout, web graphic design, web video/audio projects
and data CD creation. If these computers are not being used
for these purposes, they may be made available by lab consultants
for general computing needs. However, users may be asked to
surrender this equipment if they are using these computers for
other tasks and someone else needs them for these purposes.

Duplicating or reproducing
copyrighted materials
Use of lab equipment and resources to duplicate or reproduce
material, software, or other items regulated by copyright or
licensing agreements may be a violation of copyright law (Title
17 US Code) and/or Macalester College's copyright policy. Such
duplication is prohibited. The library lab follows the College's
guidelines
for responsible use of computing equipment and copyright
compliance policy.

Reserving or saving lab equipment
Typically computers in the library lab are available on a first
come, first served basis. Lab computers may not be saved or
reserved in advance for individual use. Lab users also may not
leave their machine unattended for more than fifteen minutes.
After that time, any open application/files may be closed to
make the computer available to other users. On limited occasions,
library lab staff may set aside certain computers or resources
for repair and/or maintenance or for special use.

Use of lab telephones
A public use phone is located on the west end of the library
lab for use by lab users. Phones located at the Service Desk
are for staff use only and not available to lab users. Calls
made on the public use phone should be no more than two minutes
in length. Please be respectful of other lab users by not talking
loudly or being disruptive while on the phone.

Personal belongings left
in the library lab
Lab users are responsible for the security of their own personal
belongings and equipment. Do not leave items unattended. We
are not responsible for lost or stolen items. Personal belongings
left unattended for more then 3 hours will be considered abandoned
and may be moved to the lab's lost and found located at the
lab info desk. Items may also be moved to the library lost and
found (located in the circulation area) and then passed on to
the general campus lost and found if not claimed promptly by
the owner.

Software supported by the
library lab
There are many software programs installed in the library lab
and imaging annex that have been installed for the convenience
of the campus community. Lab consultants have not been trained
on and do not have a working knowledge of all software
loaded on lab machines. We categorize two types of software
available in the library lab: supported and unsupported. A list
of all software (including supported and unsupported) is available
in the Equipment/Resources web
page. Supported software means that lab consultants
have been trained in basic operations and can assist you in
those functions. Lab consultants may also be able to help you
with unsupported software, but only if they have individual
experience with it. Lab consultants may refer you to other resources
available on campus for help with some software titles not supported
by the library lab.

Checking out lab equipment
The library lab makes laptop computers, digital cameras and
other equipment available for checkout to the campus community.
Only faculty, staff and students with a currently valid Macalester
ID are allowed to check out this equipment. For more information,
visit the equipment checkout pages
of the library lab web site.
