Circulation Policies and Services
Macalester Students
Current Macalester students may check out an unlimited numberof books, and up to five sound recordings and one DVD at a time.The loan period for books is six weeks. The loan period forsound recordings and DVDs is one week. Books may be renewed,unless another patron has placed a hold on an item, or the itemhas reached maximum renewals (two). Recalled items must be returnedimmediately. Items may be requested and checked out from otherCLIC (Cooperating Libraries In Consortium) schools, in accordancewith their policies. Up to seven items may be requested eachday. Inter-Library Loan (ILL) privileges are also available.
Macalester Faculty and Staff
Current Macalester faculty and staff may check out an unlimitednumber of books, and up to five sound recordings and one DVDat a time. The loan period for books is the length of the currentsemester. The loan period for sound recordings and DVDs is oneweek. Books may be renewed, unless another patron has placeda hold on an item, or the item has reached maximum renewals(two). Recalled items must be returned immediately. Items maybe requested and checked out from other CLIC (Cooperating LibrariesIn Consortium) schools, in accordance with their policies. Upto seven items may be requested each day. Inter-Library Loan(ILL) privileges are also available. Faculty may request borrowingprivileges from the University of MN after obtaining a letterfrom the DeWitt Wallace Library director.
Other CLIC School Patrons
Faculty, staff and students from other CLIC libraries may checkout books, sound recordings, and Library DVDs from Macalester,providing they have a valid, current library card. They mayalso place holds on Macalester books to have them sent to theirhome library. The loan period is determined by the parametersset by the home library. Books may be renewed, unless anotherpatron has placed a hold on an item, or the item has reachedmaximum renewals (two). Recalled items must be returned immediately.We do not honor "special" cards from other CLIC libraries,such as friends of the library, alumni, neighbors, etc.
Alumni
Alumni cards are available at circulation for $10 per year.Graduating seniors can receive their first alumni card freeof charge. Macalester alumni may check out up to ten items ata time. The loan period is six weeks for books, one week forsound recordings and DVDs, and as requested by faculty for Reserveitems.. Books may be renewed, unless another patron has placeda hold on an item, or the item has reached maximum renewals(two). Recalled items must be returned immediately. Alumni donot have loan privileges for other CLIC library materials orILL.
Retired Faculty
Macalester retired Faculty retain loan privileges for materialsfrom the DeWitt Wallace Library and CLIC collections. Interlibraryborrowing from collections outside of CLIC is not permitted.Retirees retain access to subscription databases. Media Servicesprivileges include basic video services such as reformatting,and limited borrowing from the media collection. On-site useof media facilities is subject to approval by Director of MediaServices.
Family of Faculty/Staff
Immediate family members can obtain a special library cardat the Circulation Desk. They must be at least 18 years of age,and have permission of their immediate family member who isemployed by the college. They may check out up to ten itemsat a time. The loan period is six weeks for books, one weekfor sound recordings and DVDs, and as requested by faculty forReserve items. Books may be renewed unless another patron hasplaced a hold on an item or the item has reached maximum renewals(two). Recalled items must be returned immediately. Immediatefamily members do not have loan privileges for other CLIC librarymaterials, ILL, or items on reserve.
Neighbors
Neighbor cards are available at circulation for $30 per year.The patron must live within the area bounded by University Avenue,Lexington Parkway, Ford Parkway, and Cretin Avenue, and be atleast 18 years of age to qualify for a neighbor card. Patronsmay check out up to ten items at a time. The loan period issix weeks for books, one week for sound recordings and DVDs,and as requested by faculty for Reserve items. Books may berenewed, unless another patron has placed a hold on an item,or the item has reached maximum renewals (two). Recalled itemsmust be returned immediately. Neighbors do not have loan privilegesfor other CLIC library materials or ILL.
Overdue Notices
As library materials become overdue, the library will sendyou several reminder notices via e-mail or regular mail, askingyou to either renew or return your materials. These noticesare intended as a courtesy.
Billing Notices
When a book is one month overdue, or a sound recording is oneweek overdue, it reverts to lost/billing status. A standardcharge of $65 will be applied. For interlibrary loan materials(i.e., items on loan form non-CLIC libraries) the charge is$115. Students will receive a billing notice in the mail, andthe charge will be sent to the student accounts office. If theitem is later returned, $60 will be credited to the student'saccount. $5 will remain as a mandatory late fee. Faculty, staff,alumni, neighbors and family will have the $65 charge remainon their library record, and will not be able to check out anyadditional materials until the item is returned, or the feeis paid. Alumni and neighbors will owe a mandatory $5 late feeonce the item is returned.
Renewals
Books may be renewed up to two times, unless another patronhas placed a hold on the book. Sound and video recordings andReserve items may not be renewed.

Reserve Items
Patrons may check out one reserve item at a time. If the reserveitem is a sound recording, it may be checked out with the correspondingscore and a set of headphones if needed. Overdue reserve itemsaccrue fines at $0.25 per hour. See Reserve Policy for moreinformation.
Video/DVD Recordings
The library has a small collection of popular DVDs, which circulatefor 7 days. Most video recordings are stored at Media Services.Please see their policy for more information.
Non-Circulating Items
Reference materials, archived materials and rare books, superoversize items, microforms, periodicals, and other selecteditems do not circulate. If in doubt, ask.
