Online Reference Resources

 

Use reference resources, such as encyclopedias and dictionaries, to start your research in particular topic areas. The resources listed here are all available online and are subscription services available only to current Macalester students, faculty and staff using the campus network (on campus or via our Off Campus Access service).


  • AccessScience (Date varies) Online encyclopedia of science and technology. McGraw Hill.

  • Books in Print (BooksInPrint) (Current) Database of in and out of print books. FirstSearch.

  • College Source Online (Current) Description Includes the full-text for over 20,000 college catalogs for 2-year, 4-year, Graduate, and Professional schools throughout the United States and the World.   • Contemporary Authors (Date varies) Provides complete biographical and bibliographical information and references on more than 120,000 U.S. and international authors. [InfoTrac description] InfoTrac.

  • Encyclopaedia Britannica Online (Current) Fulltext of the Encyclopedia with links to Internet resources. Encyclopaedia Britannica.

  • GPO Access (Current) GPO Access is a Web service of the U.S. Government Printing Office that provides free electronic access to information products produced by the Federal Government. The information provided on this site is the official, published version and can be used without restriction, unless specifically noted. [GPO Access database description]

  • New Grove Encyclopedia of Music & Musicians (2nd edition) This research tool includes the full text of the 29-volume print edition and a network of 3000+ Web links to musical sites, sound archives, and illustrations around the world. [grovemusic.com description]

  • Oxford English Dictionary (Current) This is the online version of the Oxford English Dictionary. Oxford University Press.

  • Oxford Reference Online (Current) Resource of reference materials including about 100 dictionary, language reference, and subject reference works published by Oxford University Press. Provides database-wide searching, subject searching across sources, and individual title searching. Oxford University Press.

  • Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy (Current) This is the online version of the Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy. Routledge. Features over 2000 original articles from over 1300 leading international experts across the discipline of philosophy.

  • Xreferplus (Current) Resource of reference materials providing access to about 150 online reference books including encyclopedias, dictionaries, thesauri and books of quotations from a variety of publishers. Covers both general reference and subject-specific reference titles for a variety of disciplines. Allows cross-referencing across different books and provides a unique, graphics-based Research Mapper for topic exploration.
