Faculty Guide to Selected Works

What is Selected Works?

  • Selected Works is our web-based service for individual faculty pages that highlight publications and performances.
  • It can present information on faculty interests, courses taught, and related links.
  • Selected Works is a component of our open access digital repository: Digital Commons at Macalester.

The DeWitt Wallace library maintains Selected Works and the DigitalCommons. We provide assistance and training for all faculty who wish to maintain and update their own pages.

How Does the Library Update Faculty Pages?

The library will update faculty pages in one of two ways:

  • Faculty may submit requests for updating their list of publications and performances using our Selected Works update request form

    or...

  • The library will update information after the annual faculty addendum has been submitted to the Provost

Faculty wishing assistance with their pages are asked to contact your department Liaison Librarian

How Can I Find My page?

  1. You can navigate to your Selected Works page from the author gallery in DigitalCommons
  2. You can type in the URL for your page.

The URL for  your Selected Works page is: works.bepress.com/firstname_lastname (all lower case with an _ between your first and lastname)

Please note: original content for the faculty Selected Works pages was taken from the Faculty Publications, Scholarship, & Research pages which were replaced by Selected Works.

Step Three: Edit My Site

When you are in your SelectedWorks account, you will have two options:

  • View My Site
  • Edit My Site

Select Edit.

Step Four: Changing Content

You will have a variety of options including uploading content. Here is where you enter citations to your work.  We have tried to maintain consistency in headings for articles, sections in books, etc.  For faculty in the performaning or fine arts, there are variations for entering exhibits or performances.

Step Five: Subjects and Abstracts

For the initial loading, we have not added any subject terms, nor abstracts.  If you would like to update your pages with that content, you can add as much detail as you would like.

After editing a page, you will need to select the "Update Site" option.

PUBLISHERS COPYRIGHT AND SELF-ARCHIVING POLICIES

Before uploading copies of articles to Selected Works, faculty need to be aware of certain copyright restrictions. If you did not retain your rights as author, please check the policies of your publisher for permissions you may need to post a copy of your article in Selected Works. Many publishers are becoming more tolerant of posting pre- or post-print versions. For a list of publishers who allow deposit of published pdf versions please see the list at http://www.sherpa.ac.uk/romeo/PDFandIR.html

If your publisher is not listed, please consult the list of publishers found by conducting a search at http://www.sherpa.ac.uk/romeo/

For those articles with copies uploaded to Selected Works, we will be making a link from the department Digital Commons page to your SW article.

If you have questions about permissions to post your article, please contact Terri Fishel. If you have questions about links from the department Digital Commons page, please contact Janet Sietmann.
