Overview of Library Services
Assists with ordering, billing and receiving of library collection materials.
Macalester alumni can access our JSTOR and Project Muse collections in MacDirect via the links in the "Your Toolbox" section. Macalester alumni may also obtain library cards at the Library Service Desk for $10 per year. Graduating seniors can receive their first alumni card free of charge. The circulation department facilitates the lending of library materials, including check-outs, returns, shelving, organizing, cleaning of shelves, and more.
The Macalester College Archives collects, preserves, and makes available for research materials that document the origins, developments, activities, achievements, and people of the College.
Research workstations are located on the main level in the Reference Area. Macintosh and Windows machines are availalbe. Specialized facilities for imaging and web page production are located on the lower level. A wireless network is accessible throughout the building. Printers are available on both the main level and lower level.
BikeShare is a free bike rental program organized by MacBike. The Library supports this by managing the lending of the bicycles.
The DeWitt Wallace Library's interlibrary loan program allows students, faculty and staff to borrow materials not immediately available at the DeWitt Wallace Library.
The course instruction unit prepares and holds instruction session for students on how to use scholarly indexes and databases and how to do good research.
Lockers are available for students who wish to have a place to store personal belongings. Lockers are located in the Link between the library and Old Main. Sign-up for lockers begins on the first day of classes. First priority for lockers will be given for students living off-campus and students with special needs. Lockers are assigned for the semester. Locks are checked out from the Service Desk. The library is not responsible for items stored in the lockers.
Media Services provides a wide range of media-related instructional support to classrooms.
A copy machine is located on Level 1, near printers. Copies may be made using cash or a copy card. Copy cards allowing copying at a discount and may be purchased by Macalester students at the Reserve/Circulation Desk. Faculty and staff may obtain copy cards that will be charged back to their departments at the Service Desk. Copying from microforms is also possible using special equipment in the microform area on the Lower Level.
The Reference unit provides users with direction to library materials, and expert advice on information sources.
The library provides all current student, faculty and staff with a RefWorks account. RefWorks is a professional tool for keeping track of sources and citations for one or multiple research projects. The RefWorks group code is needed when accessing RefWorks from off-campus. The Macalester Group Code is RWMacalesterC.
The DeWitt Wallace Library's reserves service unit provides short-term loans to assigned course readings, when requested by a professor.
Security phones are centrally located on each level. Picking up the phone will cause the emergency phone to ring at the Circulation. Please keep your possessions with you at all times, and report any cases of theft to library staff at the Service Desk. Personal possessions (including library laptops) may be confiscated by library staff if they are found left unattended. Please report any problems with personal security immediately to the library staff at the Service Desk. The library cooperates with the campus Safety and Security Office to distribute information related to safety and security to the community in a timely manner.
