iPads for Check-out


The library currently has five iPads available for checkout to Macalester students, staff, and faculty. They may be checked out from the main level Service Desk and can be borrowed for a period of three days. Included with the iPad is an iPad case, USB charging cable, and charger.

Loss of or damage to an iPad will result in a fine of $400.00. Any apps or other digital content downloaded to an iPad will be deleted upon check-in. The iPads come loaded with the following apps:

  • Adobe Reader (pdf reader and generator)
  • Angry Birds (game)
  • BBC News (international news source)
  • Bluefire Reader (ebook reader)
  • Dropbox (online repository for documents)
  • EBSCOhost (journal collection accessible from Macalester campus)
  • Epicurious (recipe database)
  • Flipboard (customizable swipe-format news-gathering)
  • Facebook (you likely have some idea what this one is about)
  • Free Books (database of free downloadable ebooks)
  • Evernote (note-taking app that syncs to external apps such as Google Calendar)
  • Google Earth (global imaging and mapping app)
  • IMDb (Internet Movie Database)
  • Kindle (Amazon-based ebook reader)
  • Localmind (local crowd-sourcing information center)
  • Mac Today (alumni magazine)
  • NPR (National Public Radio)
  • Netflix (online video lending)
  • Nook (Barnes and Noble--based ebook reader)
  • Notability (note-taking software that links to email or Dropbox)
  • Pages (word processing and more)
  • Pandora (online radio)
  • SPPL Mobile (Saint Paul Public Library online)
  • TED (TED talks and educational video online)
  • Twitter (140 characters or less)
  • The Chronicle (Chronicle for Higher Education online)
  • TWC (The Weather Channel)
  • Words With Friends (Like Scrabble, and playable with other iPad / iPhone users)
  • Yelp (crowd-sourced review database)
  • Zite (online magazine creator)
