Lives of Commitment Community Partners

  • Building Blocks Tutorial is a tutoring program for children on the West Side of Saint Paul. Lives of Commitment students work one-on-one with 2nd and 3rd graders by helping them with games, reading, writing, and math.  The West Side of St. Paul where Building Blocks is located is very diverse.  English is not the primary language spoken at home for 50% of public school children in this district.

  • English Learning Center for Immigrant and Refugee Families provides English as a Second Language (ESL), math, computer skills, and advocacy to immigrant and refugee families in the Phillips Neighborhood and Cedar-Riverside areas for South Minneapolis.  Lives of Commitment students co-teach adult English language classes.  Programs are based out of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Minneapolis.

  • Grace-Trinity Tutoring Program for Elementary School Students is an after-school program drawing mainly Spanish-speaking and bilingual youth from Jefferson Elementary School near the Uptown area of Minneapolis.  Lives of Commitment students help students with reading, math, and homework, and also help lead arts, crafts, and other fun projects.  Tutors and students eat dinner together afterwards.

  • Jane Addams School for Democracy facilitates intercultural "learning circles."  Hmong, Latino and East African immigrants partner with Lives of Commitment students to teach and learn about citizenship, education, and culture.

  • Guadalupe Alternative Program is an alternative school that educates students whose needs are not being served by the public schools. They also provide services to non-native speakers on the West Side of St. Paul.  Students will be both lead and assistant teachers in ESL classrooms for adult learners.
  • FIRE (Foundation for Immigrant Resources and Education) is an adult education organization dedicated to strengthening the lives of individuals, as well as the communities they live in. FIRE empowers lives by facilitating the development of literacy skills, fostering critical thinking and creativity through participatory learning environments; and providing opportunities for skill-sharing and awareness of immigrant experiences.  Students who partner with this site also work with Martha’s Closet, a free career clothing closet for women.
  • Neighborhood House is a multicultural, multilingual community center with programming for all ages and open doors for all people. It is often a first stop for new immigrants and refugees.  The English Language Learning (ELL) /Literacy Program at Neighborhood House creates many opportunities for non-native English speakers to learn English.  Lives of Commitment students work as classroom assistants to ELL teachers, they work with the Hmong Youth Group, and work with children in additional programs.
