Professions and Religious Leadership in the Global Commons

This program addresses issues such as:  the nature of the professions today, the role of advising in preparation for professions, ethical and moral leadership and decision-making, the role of professions as promoting the public good, etc.

The opportunity to come together in an undergraduate setting and learn about various professions gives all participants the opportunity to know more fully the challenges within different professions and the ways in which religious and ethical commitments shape professional careers.  Students will explore how all sectors of society can use their sphere of influence to work for a common good and will learn about the historic public tenets of each sector and specific professions.

The Lilly Project offers scholarships to visit seminary, divinity and rabbinical school for those students contemplating a religious vocation. Contact Lucy Forster-Smith for more information or click here for seminary visit application.

Through workshops, informational interviews, hearing from faculty as they reflect on their own profession, and seminars with alumni and community members of various careers, students will gain new understanding of the role professionals play in the global commons.  In addition, students will study and reflect on ethical and moral issues that arise in various fields and how religious or other values inform the way people negotiate these concerns.

The Professions and Religious Leadership program will include faculty and staff in reading cohorts, advising workshops, and presentations.  It already conducts a discussion group for those interested in religious vocations called Chiasma, and provides student scholarships for seminary visits, including visits to seminaries offering joint degrees in divinity and law, education or social work.
