CAMPUS WARS!
Beginning February 1st, college students around
Minnesota will pull the plug on excessive energy consumption,
literally. In a statewide competition called Campus Wars, over a dozen
schools, including the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, St.Olaf
College, Macalester College, and Carleton College, will battle
throughout the month of February to see which school can save the most
energy- possibly the largest grassroots energy saving initiative in
state history.
Organized by the Minnesota Public Interest Research Group (MPIRG), the
only predominantly student-run PIRG in the United States, and the
Minnesota College Energy Coalition, this effort will be completely
driven by students across Minnesota. They join students from around the
country who are putting pressure on their schools and local governments
to decrease nation-wide emissions levels and to improve energy
consumption habits.
Many campus groups will coordinate an intra-campus competition to see
which dormitory can reduce its energy the most, as some individual
schools did last year. This year, however, the competition has become a
state-wide contest to see which campus reduces its energy usage the
most over the course of the month of February.
