The student organization, MacCARES, received the Education Award for raising awareness about energy conservation and environmental sustainability on April 27 at Macalester’s Community Recognition Awards Celebration.

MacCARES installed a green roof over the “Fish Bowl” between Turck Hall and Doty Hall on April 14. Green roofs reduce heating and cooling costs for a building and increase roof lifespan. The student group — in partnership with the Environmental Studies Department, Facilities Management and the Development Office — hopes to install a 1350-sq.-ft green roof on Kagin Commons and has entered the EPA’s P3 student design competition in pursuit of an EPA P3 Award valued at up to $75,000.
