MACCESS is a challenging pre-College academic program for
students of color in the St. Paul high schools, grades 11-12.
During four weeks in June and July, 30 MACCESS students will
be involved in curricular and extracurricular activities at
Macalester College designed to enhance the written, oral,
and technological skills that are essential for success in
college. The MACCESS Program offers morning courses in Oral
Communication, Written Communication, and Educational Technology.
During the afternoons, workshops on critical thinking and
writing, time management, and applying to college are offered.
The students also have access to a computer lab in the afternoon
and are expected to participate in group recreation.

|
Students are evaluated formally on their academic work twice
during the semester: at mid-term and at the end of the program.
Faculty and staff spend considerable time describing each
student's efforts and progress. Upon successful completion
of the MACCESS Program, students receive a $500 stipend. This
serves as one sort of acknowledgement of their dedication
and perserverence in the MACCESS Program.
|
|
Overall, the MACCESS program is an ideal opportunity for
interested and committed students to gain valuable skills
and attitudes for success in a college or university setting.
For those who may not have much familiarity with college or
university academic programs, MACCESS initiates students into
the rigors of college or university programs and reinforces
the general value of education. MACCESS is a wonderful opportunity
for those who want to pursue their education past high school!
