    I'm Back...

I haven’t blogged in a while, but as I start up again I have one main goal in mind. I want to create a greater discussion on this blog, rather than just one or two comments in agreement after every post. It is with that in mind, as well as the upcoming caucuses and primaries in Minnesota and across the country, that I have picked the following topic.

    Challenges from the Left

I think, and hope, that I am going to be in the minority for my opinion on this. But as many of you know across the country progressive Democrats are challenging moderate Democrats, often with the support of Democratic insiders. Two of the best examples of this are the Connecticut Senate race where former 2000 vice presidential candidate Joe Lieberman is being challenged by successful businessman Ned Lamont and in House District Texas-28 were Ciro Rodriguez is challenging Henry Cuellar.

Now, I am no fan of Republicans calling themselves Democrats simply to get elected (*cough Randy Kelly cough*). However, I am troubled by this recent serge in challenges against Democratic incumbents for a number of reasons. First, if it is in a race with a contested general election it takes resources away from keeping Republicans out of office. Next, Democrats ought to be a big tent party, accepting of all types of people and ideals under a basic set of principles. Also, I’m concerned that if the Dems force their moderates out and the Republicans do the same even less will get done in Washington D.C. and this isn’t good for anyone. But this is just my opinion, what do you think? Post it! Better yet make your own entry on the blog on this or any other topic that suits your fancy, if you don’t have access let me know.

I just gave Ned somme money--Joe Lieberman needs to either get a backbone or get out. It's not even a Democrat thing: I'm tired of seeing him look after Joe Lieberman and only Joe Lieberman.

Full disclosure: I am working for Ned's campaign. I'm biased.

Personally, I think primaries are a good thing. They get people excited and involved. They provide a forum for debating the topics.

This isn't about forcing moderates out or forcing liberals out. It isn't about labels or left and right. It is about democracy, it is about giving everyone a voice in the political process, and not just the insiders.

One of the things that encouraged Ned to run against Joe as Joe's suggestion that we shouldn't challenge Bush on the issue of the war. We need to stand behind our commander in chief.

Well, I respectfully disagree. If we are fighting for democracy in Iraq, we should be fighting for it here as well, and part of that fight includes encouraging primaries.
