What is Mac Reads?
MacReads unites the students, faculty, staff, alumni, neighbors and friends of Macalester in a common activity – talking about books and ideas together.
What books have been discussed so far?
MacReads started off with it's Spring Semester 2005 selections Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World by Jack Weatherford and Mountains beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder. During Fall Semester 2005, MacReads discussed Don Quixote in honor of the books 400th anniversary. The MacReads selection for Spring Semester 2006 is Wisdom for a Livable Planet by Carl N. McDaniel.
How are books and topics selected for MacReads?
Books and topics are selected by the MacReads coordinators from the Alumni Office and the Macalester library, in consultation with interested Macalester faculty. MacReads participants are encouraged to recommend topics and books for consideration. To make a suggestion, contact the MacReads coordinators.
Where can I get of a copy of MacReads book(s)?
Participants living on or near campus may check out the MacReads books from the Macalester library, which has multiple copies of selected MacReads books available to lend. The books are also widely available at public libraries and bookstores, including the Macalester campus bookstore, located in the Lampert Building, 36 North Snelling.
