Dave Foreman speaks on "Rewilding North America"
7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15
John B. Davis Lecture Hall, Campus Center
Dave Foreman—environmental activist, wilderness advocate and the subject of Chapter 3 in Wisdom for a Livable Planet—will talk about “Rewilding North America” on campus. The presentation is sponsored by Macalester’s Environmental Studies Department and is free and open to the public.
Foreman has been a wilderness advocate for over 30 years. He worked for the Wilderness Society from1973 to 1980 as Southwest Regional Representative in New Mexico and then as Director of Wilderness Affairs in Washington. In 1980, he helped found Earth First!, an environmental group committed to a biocentric world view and to protecting wilderness areas through direct action. In 1985, he published EcoDefense: A Field Guide to Monkeywrenching. In 1991, he left Earth First and co-founded the Wildlands Project, whose goal is to establish a network of protected wilderness areas across North America. During the 1990s, he served as executive editor of Wild Earth Magazine, served on the Sierra Club Board of Directors and co-founded the New Mexico Wilderness Alliance. In 2003, Foreman helped found the Rewilding Institute, a think tank dedicated to “the development and promotion of ideas and strategies to advance continental-scale conservation in North America and to combat the extinction crisis," where he currently serves as director.
Foreman’s most recent book is Rewilding North America: A Vision for Conservation in the 21st Century (Island Press, 2004). This book examines the species extinction crisis, with special emphasis on the North American situation and uses the insights of conservation biology and practical politics to propose a “bold, scientifically credible, practically achievable, and hopeful vision of an enduring wilderness for North America.”
