Humanity faces great environmental challenges in the 21st century including air pollution, steadily increasing population, escalating consumption of resources, global climate change and more.

The Mac Reads selection for Spring Semester 2006, Wisdom for a Livable Planet, asks the questions: How long can we ignore these challenges? What can we do about them? And, will we change our interaction with the natural world?

About the Author

Portrait of author Daniel N. McDaniel.Carl N. McDaniel is a professor of Biology at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Troy, New York) where he founded the university's undergraduate environmental science program. His previous book, Paradise for Sale (2000), explores the relationship between economic systems and the environment.
