Mathematica's New Version: Highlights and Practicalities

Stan Wagon, Macalester College

I will review the changes in Mathematica with an emphasis on the new features that are most relevant to work among our faculty and students. Highlights include:

  1. The ability to generate dynamically changing output. Thus one can easily set up displays that change as any one of several parameters changes
  2. New capabilities in three-dimensional graphics, such as fast rotation of surfaces, and the inclusion of customized lines on the surface.
  3. The inclusion of huge new databases allowing visualization of complex data. Example: Data on 160,000 cities of the world is included, as well as similar databases in economics, geography, chemistry, physics, astronomy, and, even mathematics.
