written books about many of Minnesota’s favorite (and infamous)
sons, including Sinclair Lewis, F. Scott Fitzgerald and train robbers
John & George Sontag. He has also written two historical mysteries
for children set in Minnesota, featuring sleuths Doc & Tweed.
Mr. Koblas is perhaps best known for his writings concerning the
Jesse James Northfield Raid, which he will speak about today. His
books on the Jesse James & members of the James-Younger Gang
include Bushwhacker: Cole Younger and the Kansas-Missouri War, Faithful
Unto Death, Confessions of the Ninth Man, When the Heavens Fell,
and Jesse James Ate Here: An Outlaw Tour & History of Minnesota.
His newest book, Minnesota Grit: The Men Who Defeated the James-Younger
Gang was published this year by North Star Press. The book centers
on the stories of 21 ordinary citizens who became involved in the
pursuit of the gang after the 1876 Northfield bank robbery, including
Madelia's "Magnificent Seven," responsible for capturing
the three Younger brothers at Hanska Slough. Along with speaking
to numerous history aficionados, civic groups, library associations
across the country, Mr. Koblas has also appeared on ABC-TV’s
"Good Morning America" and CBS-TV’s "The Early
