Teaching INNOPAC Searching to Library Users
PRESENTER: Jan Malcheski, Reference Librarian, Archbishop John Ireland Library, University of St. Thomas

Most current online public catalogs have moved "online" into a very different world than the offline world in which they were, slowly, over decades, cunningly built to reside - a different world made up of Googles and Amazon.coms.  This presentation looks at issues related to teaching these "different world" patrons how to use the Innovative public catalog. The presenter will delve into such issues as how we can catalog with the user experience in mind and what we can learn from Amazon.com and Google to improve our public catalogs.

 -Expanding the WebPAC with Z39.50
Presenters: Steve Waage, Systems Administrator, CLIC Consortium and Jan Malcheski,Reference        Librarian, Archbishop John Ireland Library, University of St. Thomas
An overview of the basics of setting up and configuring Innovative's Z39.50 client for use with the    WebPAC, this session will highlight a project within the CLIC consortium where the Z39.50 client was    used to create a "shared" catalog for theology libraries within the Twin Cities.

-How Authority Records Saved My Life: Authority Records & the WebPAC
Presenters: Susan Henry, Cataloging Supervisor, Saint Paul Public Library and John Larson, Web                Librarian, Saint Paul Public Library
Authority records enable librarians to provide uniform access to materials in library catalogs and to    provide clear identification of authors and subject headings. Authority records also provide cross    references to lead users to the headings used in library catalogs. This session is an examination of how    authority records affect searching in the Innovative WebPAC.

  2:00pm-2:50pm

 -Tap the Power of AVS
Presenters: Jerry Caswell, Head of Library Information Technologies, Univ of Northern Iowa Library
and John Wynstra, Library Information Systems Specialist, Univ of Northern Iowa Library

Advanced Keyword Searching has brought a lot of power to the WebPAC. However, users do not know     how to tap that power to effectively serve their research needs. The Univ of Northern Iowa Library has     introduced both predefined and guided searches into its new Library Gateway to tap the power of AVS     and to leverage the library's investment in its catalog as the database of record for both print and     electronic resources.

-Tools for Use With Exported Records from the WebPAC: RefWorks & EndNote
Presenters: Beth Hillemann, Reference/Instruction Librarian, Macalester College Library and Kris         MacPherson, Reference/Instruction Librarian, St Olaf College
The Innovative WebPac allows users to create a list of selected Bibliographic records (a bibliography)    while performing a search in the Web OPAC and export those records for use elsewhere. This session will    cover the basics of this capability and will also highlight the tools used by some libraries in the area to    create "added value" to this capability: RefWorks and EndNote.
