Karla joined the Department of Multicultural Life in 2002 as the first Director of the Lealtad-Suzuki Center (LSC). In this role, she has the opportunity to engage with students from many different backgrounds and to work diligently to make sure that access to higher education is possible for all people. As the Director of the LSC, Karla is a training and development coordinator around skills related to cross-cultural communication, group work, and recognition of difference; coordinates with various offices and departments to assist in the management and promotion of intentional multicultural programming, education, and services; and develops new multicultural programming for the Macalester campus community. Karla coordinates the Pluralism and Unity Program, the Allies Project, the SPEAK! Series, Soup & Substance, and the Student Identity Collectives. She received her bachelor’s degree in Psychology at Iowa State University, and her master’s degree in Counseling and Personnel Services at the University of Maryland.
