MacJazz, directed by Joan Griffith, is an 18-piece big band which performs classical and contemporary big band jazz. MacJazz has
performed a number of times at the Elmhurst and Eau Claire Jazz
festivals, as well as at the Twin Cities small college jazz festival and in concerts on the Macalester campus.
MacJazz often features new compositions by present and past band members.
Five of Macalester's instrumental studio instructors specialize in teaching jazz
improvisation: Joan Griffith, in addition to her work as MacJazz director, teaches jazz
guitar and bass; Kathy Jensen, saxophone and instrumental
improvisation; Dave Jensen, trumpet; Mike Vasich, piano; and Steve Kimball, drum set. All instructors are active performers in the Twin Cities jazz scene.
Auditioning
Auditions are typically held several days prior to the first
day of classes. A sign-up sheet will be posted on the Music

Rehearsals
MacJazz rehearsals are held Tuesdays and Thursdays 7 - 8:30 PM in the Concert Hall.
