Wind Ensemble
The Macalester Wind Ensemble is an auditioned group of 40-50 students conducted by Assistant Professor of Music, Cary John Franklin. The Wind Ensemble plays a wide range of music ranging from the standard band works to the exciting music being written today. Repertoire from recent concerts include the Holst Military Suites, Alfred Reed’s The Hounds of Spring, Shostakovich’s Festive Overture, Frank Ticheli’s Vesuvius and Eric Whitacre’s October. The Macalester Wind Ensemble performs two to three concerts a semester and rehearses on Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 4:45-6:00 PM in the Concert Hall as well as some Friday afternoons. The concerts also include chamber music for various groups of wind instruments.
Instrumental Auditions (Orchestra and Wind Ensemble)
Auditions for incoming students are held during orientation week and auditions for returning students are held the first week of school. Sign up lists for audition times are posted in the music building lobby. Students should prepare two short and contrasting excerpts. These can be from a solo, etude or from an ensemble piece. Students also will be expected to play a set of basic scales. Each audition lasts about ten minutes and an accompanist is not needed.
Additional auditions can be arranged throughout the year upon request.
