Mezzo-soprano Laura Nichols completed her formal musical training at the Eastman School of Music. She subsequently sang major opera and oratorio roles in Boston and New York Cit before coming to St. Paul.
She began her musical career in the Twin Cities singing with the Minnesota Opera, where she was a principal member of the world premiere casts of Conrad Susa's Black River and Dominic Argento’s Casanova’s Homecoming. Ms. Nichols has been a featured soloist under the batons of Robert DeCormier, John Harbison, Layton James, Joel Revson, Helmut Rilling, Kathy Romey, Robert Shaw, Osma Vanska, and Pinchas Zuckerman. Representative orchestras with which she has been a soloist include the American Symphony Orchestra, the Duluth Symphony Orchestra, the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and the Minnesota Orchestra. Her mentors include the famed mezzo-sopranos Jan DeGaetani and Elizabeth Mannion.
Laura recently released a CD of never-before recorded songs by Anton Rubinstein and St. Paul resident Justin Busch. One can find it for sale at cdbaby.com/cd/nicolsguillaume.
Ms. Nichols is currently writing her dissertation to complete her Ph.D. in music at the University of Minnesota. Her research focuses on the vocal health practices of singers and is entitled “Exploring the Methods and Sources of Vocal Hygiene Habits in Professional Classical Singers.” She can be reached at nichols@macalester.edu.
