Photo by Colin Jarvis, Santiago, Argentina. After a day performing free medical and dental care for an isolated rural community, a group of volunteers played soccer with the local children. I'm shown here with twins by a sign that reads"pilotos solidarios," the name of the non-profit organization that serves these rural communities. The group provides their only form of medical attention; it comes to each community only once or twice a year.Photo by Colin Jarvis, Santiago, Argentina. An Omani walks along the shore of the Bimmah Sinkhole, a circular crater created by limestone that collapsed in on itself that has since filled with groundwater from the nearby sea. Local legend, however, says that a piece of moon collided with Earth to create the hole. The sinkhole is so deep that it is black in places, though the varying depths create a beautiful palette of colors. Photo by Jessica Vaughan, Ilhda de Mare,Bahia, Brazil. After two hours on a small speedboat, we reached Ilha de Mare, a small fishing island with a population of less than 200, where we would stay for the next few days and conduct life-history interviews. The ride had been choppy, but upon reaching our destination, the clouds broke and we witnessed this sunset. We walked through shallow water fto the shore, stepping on the mussels gathered by local women.Photo by Jessica Vaughan, Ilhda de Mare,Bahia, Brazil. Photo by Natalie Pavlatos, Northern Ireland On one of the last days of our program, my friends and I ended up on a beach in the small town of Ballycastle on the north coast of Northern Ireland, not far from where we lived. We reflected on our time together and what it meant to be leaving. We shared the last moments of daylight together in silence, as the sun set on our time together in Northern Ireland just as it did over the cliffs of Ballycastle.Photo by Natalie Pavlatos, Northern Ireland On one of the last days of our program, my friends and I ended up on a beach in the small town of Ballycastle on the north coast of Northern Ireland, not far from where we lived. Photo by Natalie Pavlatos, Northern Ireland The neighborhood of the Fountain in Derry/Londonderry is a small community of unionists in a heavily nationalist area of Northern Ireland. As such, it is frequently attacked by petrol and paint bombs, the remnants of which can be seen strewn on the pavement. However, there is a strong sense of identity shared by those who live in the Fountain that binds the community together through adversity. These murals and painted curbs can be seen from the walls surrounding the city center, and are painted on a building that houses a daycare. On the back side of these walls are colorful paintings of Winnie the Pooh, Bob the Builder, and Tigger.Photo by Natalie Pavlatos, Northern Ireland The neighborhood of the Fountain in Derry/Londonderry is a small community of unionists in a heavily nationalist area of Northern Ireland. Seamans, a 145-foot sailing research vessel, at dawn off the shore of Rangiroa in the Tuomotu Archipelago, one of the largest coral atolls in the world. The speck on the horizon is the Balmoral, a luxury cruise ship more than four times larger than the Robert C. Seamans. Photo by Rachel Adler, Berlin, Germany During my travels in Germany and throughout Europe, there was one constant: construction. Europe is an amalgam of old and new architecture that's still undergoing change, which I tried to highlight in this photo from Potsdam, a suburb south of Berlin. The structure in the foreground that reads Schaustelle is a viewing spot from which passers by can take in the changing environment.Photo by Rachel Adler, Berlin, Germany During my travels in Germany and throughout Europe, there was one constant: construction. Butterflies and balloons, monkeys and Machu Picchu—these are among the startling images captured by Macalester students who studied abroad last spring. Nearly 50 such photos were submitted to the Study Away Photo Contest, sponsored each semester by Campus Programs and the Library. Visitors to a November reception voted on winners in three categories—people, culture, and environment— and those winners are on display in Markim Hall until the next contest comes around.
